Military history sites in Jaamankangas 

Diver­sion city

During the Winter War and the Conti­nua­tion War years of 1939–1944, a replica of the city of Joensuu was built in an old fire clearing in Jaaman­kangas. This type of area is also called a diver­sion city. The replica city was built to deceive the Soviet Air Force and protect the inhabi­tants of Joensuu from bombing raids.

During summer 2022, an infor­ma­tion board was set up beside a new lean-to shelter built by the munici­pa­lity. The project was imple­mented as coope­ra­tion between the munici­pa­lity of Kontio­lahti and the Kontio­lahti Reser­vi­läiset and Sotien 1939–45 Kontio­lahden Perin­ne­toi­mi­kunta organisations.

Salpa Line fortifications

The Salpa Line cuts through the Jaaman­kangas area in Kontio­lahti between Lake Höytiäinen and Pielis­joki River. Stone anti-tank lines, trenches and anti-tank ditches can be seen in several places. 

Salpa Line machine gun nest and comme­mo­ra­tive plaque

A World War II machine gun nest and the Salpa Line comme­mo­ra­tive plaque are located at the inter­sec­tion of the Jaaman­kan­kaantie and Taski­sentie roads in Jaaman­kangas. Salpa Line forti­fica­tions can be seen at several locations in Kontiolahti.

Bomb crater

A bomb crater is located between Vanhan Nurmeksen tie road and the railway track. Most of the crater is already overgrown.

Hirvi­ranta flight activi­ties and comme­mo­ra­tive plaque

A mainte­nance base for Finnish long-distance patrol flights and float planes and a German flight squadron is located near the what is now a swimming beach. The comme­mo­ra­tive plaque was installed in summer 2021. 

Post-World War II house built for war veterans

The house is a typical 1.5‑storey wooden home built for World War II veterans and located between Hirvi­ranta and Leiri­niemi near the mainte­nance base for long-distance patrol aircraft. The area is priva­tely owned at this time.

Forest of Memories

A monument comme­mo­ra­ting the impor­tance of volun­teer firewood collec­tion to security of supply during the war was created as part of the Finland 100 ‑cente­nary festivities.

Uuronsuo mire

An anti-tank obstacle consis­ting of four rows of stones. The stones are placed horizon­tally on the ground with the more sloped side facing in the defen­sive direc­tion. A protec­tive wall in front of the stone obstacle slopes towards the defen­sive direc­tion. A ditch lies behind the stones.

“Lauta­murju” prison camp in Ristisaari

During the Conti­nua­tion War, the Risti­saari area of Kontio­lahti was the site of a prison camp for Soviet soldiers. The priso­ners worked in local homes and especially at the Risti­saari support sorting worksite. Today the area is priva­tely owned and there is no longer anything to see.
