Military history sites in Jaamankangas

Diversion city
During the Winter War and the Continuation War years of 1939–1944, a replica of the city of Joensuu was built in an old fire clearing in Jaamankangas. This type of area is also called a diversion city. The replica city was built to deceive the Soviet Air Force and protect the inhabitants of Joensuu from bombing raids.
During summer 2022, an information board was set up beside a new lean-to shelter built by the municipality. The project was implemented as cooperation between the municipality of Kontiolahti and the Kontiolahti Reserviläiset and Sotien 1939–45 Kontiolahden Perinnetoimikunta organisations.
Salpa Line fortifications
The Salpa Line cuts through the Jaamankangas area in Kontiolahti between Lake Höytiäinen and Pielisjoki River. Stone anti-tank lines, trenches and anti-tank ditches can be seen in several places.

Salpa Line machine gun nest and commemorative plaque
A World War II machine gun nest and the Salpa Line commemorative plaque are located at the intersection of the Jaamankankaantie and Taskisentie roads in Jaamankangas. Salpa Line fortifications can be seen at several locations in Kontiolahti.
Bomb crater
A bomb crater is located between Vanhan Nurmeksen tie road and the railway track. Most of the crater is already overgrown.

Hirviranta flight activities and commemorative plaque
A maintenance base for Finnish long-distance patrol flights and float planes and a German flight squadron is located near the what is now a swimming beach. The commemorative plaque was installed in summer 2021.
Post-World War II house built for war veterans
The house is a typical 1.5‑storey wooden home built for World War II veterans and located between Hirviranta and Leiriniemi near the maintenance base for long-distance patrol aircraft. The area is privately owned at this time.

Forest of Memories
A monument commemorating the importance of volunteer firewood collection to security of supply during the war was created as part of the Finland 100 ‑centenary festivities.
Uuronsuo mire
An anti-tank obstacle consisting of four rows of stones. The stones are placed horizontally on the ground with the more sloped side facing in the defensive direction. A protective wall in front of the stone obstacle slopes towards the defensive direction. A ditch lies behind the stones.

“Lautamurju” prison camp in Ristisaari
During the Continuation War, the Ristisaari area of Kontiolahti was the site of a prison camp for Soviet soldiers. The prisoners worked in local homes and especially at the Ristisaari support sorting worksite. Today the area is privately owned and there is no longer anything to see.
