Military history sites in Kontioranta 

Lotta­kioski

A wartime kiosk maintained by the local Kontio­lahti section of the Lotta Svärd organi­sa­tion was moved from Kontio­lahti parish village to Kontio­ranta in the late 1940s.

Garrison

Many military units have operated in the area since the 1940s. The most recent of these was the North Karelia Brigade, which was disbanded at the end of 2013.

Comme­mo­ra­tive plaque honou­ring the founder of the garrison

A comme­mo­ra­tive plaque on the wall of the old headquar­ters building honours the establish­ment of the garrison. Unveiled on 20 November 1968.

Kollaan Vasama monument

The Kollaa battles took place in the village of Suistamo, which was located on Kollaan­joki River in the Ladoga Karelia region. The fighting began on 7 December 1939 and conti­nued until the end of the Winter War on 13 March 1940. The saying “Kollaa kestää” (Kollaa will hold) reminds younger genera­tions of this battle. A monument comme­mo­ra­ting the battle was erected in Kollaa on 20 November 1959 in a ceremony attended by a large group of veterans.

Museum and Heritage Farm 

The Border of Memories Museum records the national defence and military history of the Kontio­lahti region. The museum brings objects, stories and diffe­rent types of memories from the region back to the region.

Kontion­niemen paran­tola (sanato­rium)

During the Conti­nua­tion War, Kontio­niemen paran­tola housed the wards of Military Hospital 22. Care home enterprises currently operate in the facility, so permis­sion is required to visit.

Jaeger Regiment 9 monument

Jaeger Regiment 9 was established in Kontio­ranta on 10 June 1941. Battles were fought in the area between Ääninen and Ladoga. The most distant battle­fields were Ostajoki-Kopova-Gora. Discharge on 8 November 1944. The monument was unveiled on 19 November 1988. The ceremony was attended by 250 Jaeger Regiment 9 veterans.
